Around fifty automobiles have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Officers say they were notified late on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then discovered numerous other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state initial examinations indicate the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; investigators are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in association with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were working "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A senior political figure stated the attack rendered him without words and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he stated on online, recalling the death of nine victims by a shooter focusing on people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
