Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution
Democratic officials expressed anger after the ex-president accused a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be detained and punished "by death" following their posting of a controversial video.
The Message That Sparked the Debate
The clip, published on earlier this week, features six Democratic elected officials who previously served in military or defense positions.
"Like us, you all took an vow to safeguard and support this constitution," the representatives affirmed in the short video. "Currently, the threats to our constitution don't only come from abroad, but from domestically. Our regulations are explicit, you can reject unlawful commands, you can reject unlawful commands, you must decline unlawful commands. No one has to follow directives that violate the statutes or our national charter."
The Former President's Angry Reaction
The clip appeared to provoke a furious response from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump posted on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another message, he wrote: "This represents really concerning, and Harmful to our Nation. Their words cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Leaders Answer
Following Trump's comments on that day, Democratic leadership issued a combined declaration denouncing the statements.
"Political violence has no position in the United States," they stated. "Representatives who participated in the video all served our United States with great loyalty and distinction. We clearly censure Donald Trump's appalling and harmful calls for execution against members of Congress, and appeal to House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in communication with protective services "to make certain the security of these representatives and their families."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these radical online messages and recant his violent language before he leads to violence," the statement stated.
Representatives' Firm Response
The representatives who were featured in the video also released a response.
"We are former service members and national security professionals who value this country and took an oath to defend and support the constitution of the United States," they stated. "That oath is permanent, and we plan to honor it. No intimidation, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that important obligation."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president views it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to repeat the legal requirements," they continued. "Our service members should understand that we have their protection as they fulfill their vow to the founding principles and responsibility to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They stated: "Every American must unite and condemn the former president's demands for our death and partisan aggression. This is a moment for principled stance."
More Political Comments
The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's comments and published on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the former president is demanding the execution of elected officials."
He continued: "This represents an direct THREAT. All senators, all representatives, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should condemn this immediately and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have leading members of the government advising military personnel to disobey orders, I think that is without precedent in the nation's past."
The GOP official also allegedly stated to journalists that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the violation of treason" but that "legal experts have to parse the wording and establish all that."
White House Response
During a administration briefing on that day, when questioned by a reporter, "Is the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative answered: "Absolutely not."
"We should understand about what the former president is addressing," the representative stated. "There are current representatives of the American legislature who coordinated to organize a recorded statement to personnel of the national defense, to active duty service members urging them to disobey the executive's legal commands."
She stated: "The sanctity of our defense system rests on the command structure, and if that system is broken, it can result in casualties, it can lead to confusion, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are basically supporting."
