Tuesday brought citizens of the world's most polluted city encountered breathing severely hazardous air that was classified as the "critical" category.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Readings

Multiple areas of Delhi showed an AQI over 500, which translates to ten times the recommended threshold set by the World Health Organization.

Particular areas, levels of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1,800, amounting to 15-20x exceeding safe levels.

Pyrotechnics Prohibition and Current Developments

Since 2020, officials had implemented a complete ban on the sale and use of firecrackers during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the dangerous smog that covers the city as colder weather approaches.

Nevertheless recently, the recently formed local leadership appealed to the highest court to propose a modification of the ban.

They proposed allowing "green crackers" – previously questioned by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "heritage and public health".

Court Ruling and Implementation

To the disappointment of medical and ecological activists, the court complied with the request, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during specific time windows throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was widespread violation of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with little regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.

Numerous air quality sensors throughout the city registered pollution spiking around late evening to the most severe measurements observed during the festival in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Consequences

The widespread use of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also initiated a controversy with adjacent Pakistan, with officials in Pakistani Punjab partially attributing worsening air quality in the city of Lahore on contaminants coming from India following the events.

Chronic Environmental Crisis

Alarmingly severe levels of pollution in the capital have remained as a significant issue for fifteen-plus years, with the problem gradually deteriorating.

Around celebratory seasons, the amount of hazardous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been observed to shoot up to significantly exceeding the worst levels ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was formerly viewed as the world's most polluted city.

Various Pollution Sources

The situation in the city is attributed to a combination of various sources including automobile exhaust, dust, development work, waste incineration and smoke from farm burning in adjacent areas of neighboring agricultural zones.

Throughout these areas, agricultural workers illegally burn crop residue to clear them quickly, producing toxic pollution that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as colder air descends.

Health and Economic Consequences

Public health and economic consequences on the roughly thirty-three million people residing in the metropolitan zone is significant, according to multiple investigations.

The contaminated air results in increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and lung conditions, and can result in cancer.

The pollution is estimated to be accounting for approximately 10k untimely fatalities each year in the city.
