Ipswich boxer Fabio Wardley Expected to Become World Boxing Champion as Usyk Gives Up Championship
England's Fabio Wardley is expected to be elevated to heavyweight title holder after the Ukrainian champion chose to vacate his world title
This follows after Usyk informed the World Boxing Organisation he would not engage in a mandatory title defence against Wardley
Boxing Organization's Position
The boxing organization confirmed that Usyk had "elected to relinquish his title after thoughtful consideration"
Usyk continues to possess the WBA, WBC and IBF heavyweight titles, having defeated Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium in the summer month to become a repeat unified title holder
He originally secured the complete unified champion in May 2024 by overcoming Tyson Fury, before vacating another belt a month afterwards and choosing to avoid the obligatory contender
"Organization head Olivieri praised the Ukrainian fighter in a official release"
"The organization offers its sincere admiration and thanks to Oleksandr Usyk, an perfect record holder across weight classes"
"His career stands as one of the most impressive and memorable of the recent fighting history"
The organization continued that its organization will always welcome the champion and his camp"
Title Reign
The champion captured the championship in 2021 by beating the British star and went on to successfully defend multiple times
In summer, the WBO had ordered negotiations for a mandatory defence against temporary title holder Parker, only for a Usyk's physical issue to cause the delay of the contest
New Champion's Path
But the 30-year-old British fighter, captured the temporary championship from Parker with a significant shock in the 11th round at London's O2 Arena last month and was required to challenge Usyk before the September deadline
The championship body still needs to verify the title change but his promoter Frank Warren believes it is a done deal
"Britain has a fresh boxing champion and a rising boxing talent"
"A truly extraordinary path throughout my decades as a boxing representative and I could not be happier for the British fighter"
"Significant bouts in the future for the coming period as he defends his WBO belt and establishes his place in the fighting community"
The champion started fighting relatively late, developing through alternative boxing and has had just 21 professional fights
