Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side

The forward, with half a year left on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League team.

Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.

Consistent Goal Threat to Boost the Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Steam at Carrington

Securing the German international comes at a time when United appear to be building momentum.

Their recent performances feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has seen further business:

  1. The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
