New York's next mayor confirms he will make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that sparked debate in his election bid.
A Traditional Abode
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors after the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core policy, was not quick to announce he would live there immediately following his victory in November.
"The choice rested on keeping my family safe and the importance of directing my full attention on implementing the platform on affordability voters elected me on," Mamdani said on Monday.
A Fond Farewell
His home was in Astoria, Queens, a community known for its abundance of immigrant populations and culinary diversity.
"To Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.
"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, Astoria will continue to reside within me and my work," he added.
Political Debate
Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.
However his rivals, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the apartment although he came from a prominent family.
A House Not Always Used
Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg argued it should be a place for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Grand New Home
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his humble Astoria apartment.
Adorned in cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed to reflect the home's original era.
The property, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, which means the city imposes caps on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers see such units as essential protections as the housing expenses exceeds the means of many residents.
Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
