A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in public works. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
