While Swimmers Fled Violence, Widely-Shared Photo Shows Lifeguard Running ‘All Out’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent local of Bondi, has always considered the famous coast as her back yard. On that fateful weekend night, she, along with numerous neighbors, noticed pops reverberating across the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was too light and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. She left her apartment, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces on display told her trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the street, talking to a pair who had run up the slope still dripping wet, she heard someone coming up behind her. It was a lifeguard, running at full speed to Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was simply racing by. It was just him moving in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to flee, carrying that big kit and without footwear … He moved towards something that certainly every part of you would tell you to move in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely full throttle racing.”

A Powerful Moment of Heroism In the Wake of Chaos

The photo that Ching snapped of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous instances of valour in the following of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid surf lifesavers, police and medical teams caring for numerous victims.

“Our lifeguards demonstrate altruism every day in keeping our world-famous coastlines safe for visitors, but what we saw on that day should be celebrated.

“As we grieve and process the horror of this violent and horrific act of violence, I think it is important that we reflect on just how much good we have seen in the midst of such darkness.”
